Communication is a crucial aspect of any relationship,
especially in marriage. Effective communication can strengthen the bond between
partners and promote marital stability. Therefore, the aim of this study was to
assess the impact of Verbal and Non-Verbal communication on Marital stability.
Survey data was collected with semi structured questionnaire from 400 selected
marriage couples in the Sunyani Municipality via a multistage sampling
approach. Descriptive statistics and partial least squares structural equation
modelling was employed for data analysis.
The findings of the study show that majority of respondents
perceive “Communication is the key to a successful marriage” with a mean score
of 2.81. With regards to the PLS – SEM, constructs validity and reliability
test were good. Moreover, the Standardized
root means square residual (SRMR) value of 0.070 and Normed Fit Index of 0.881
and Goodness of fit (GOF) value of 0.360 indicates that the structural model is
fit. Overall two relationships were hypothesised in the study. The results
further showed that both verbal communication and non- verbal communication
were supported and has a positive relationship with marital stability. In
addition, the results indicated that, majority (268) respondents agreed that
“lack of respect” is the main barrier of effective marital communication, with
a mean score of 2.81 whereas majority (143) of the respondents agreed that “Too
much information out at a time” was the least barrier of effective marital
communication, which had a mean score of 2.12.
